The musical collaboration now known as Garden Gnomes started in the later part of 2004. Steve Felkins and Darrell Wildt began playing music together for the sake of playing music. Steve Felkins is the former drummer of Madverb, a band that was based out of Stockton, CA. Madverb did earn local radio play during the late 90s. Darrell Wildt, who is also experienced in previous music endeavors—such as Peach Fuzz and Barry Mahoggenya—both bands were based out of Modesto, CA. Peach Fuzz, who some categorized their style as POST-PUNK-POWER-POP was in the final mixes of their first CD when the band closed for business.
In the early part of 2005, Kevin Wilson joined the line-up of musicians, and blessed the bands with his own unique writing style and knowledge of classical guitar. The icing on the cake, Charles Canada began jamming with the G-Gnomes in January 2006. Musically speaking, Charles is a very busy man. Not only is Charles an active member of the Garden Gnomes, he is also an active member in two other local Cover-song based bands.
In 2007, the band released their first album, "CLANDESTINE GNOME," which featured 8 songs. The band refers to their first album as the sample platter of the different styles of music that they cover. The album was truly a combined work since alll members contributed original material, and three of the members step into the lead vocals position on at least one track each.
In 2008, the band began the recording sessions for their second album titled, "EXISTENTIAL GARDEN," which features 12 original songs. Their second album features some of the similar styles found on their debut, but the overall feel of the album is more up tempo and "rock" oriented. EXISTENTIAL GARDEN will be available in early Febraury of 2010.
As for music style and influence, “rock” best describes the sound of the Garden Gnomes, in order to keep the description simple. If a person would like more detail on the influences in order to understand what they can expect from a Garden Gnomes performance, here is a semi-short list of influences (in no particular order):
Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Violent Femmes, Johnny Cash, Rush, Iron Maiden, Cheap Trick, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Tomahawk, Faith No More, Allman Brothers, Sparkle Horse, The Beach Boys, Ted Nugent, Live, Nirvana, The Doors, Rusted Root, The Beatles, Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading, The Who, Mr. Bungle, The Grateful Dead, Primus, & Fantomas.
In short, the Garden Gnomes style of music is a diverse as the moods experienced in life.
A person that is happy all the time, may actually annoy a few people. A person that is angry all the time, probably has some problems too.
